Naming emotion does two things:

Try this structure instead:
- Acknowledge: “I can see how frustrating this is.”
- Validate: “Anyone in your position would feel the same.”
- Refocus: “Let’s look at what we can do next.”
You’re not agreeing with aggression. You’re acknowledging emotion while keeping boundaries intact.
That balance is gold in OSCE marking schemes.
Technique 5: Breaking bad news - without sounding rehearsed
Frameworks like SPIKES are helpful. But examiners can tell when candidates recite them mechanically.
Humanise it.
- Use natural language, not textbook phrasing
- Sit at eye level when possible
- Keep your tone steady, not overly sombre
And after delivering the news - stop talking.
Give the patient space to respond. Cry. Ask questions. Say nothing.
Your silence is part of the communication.
